Manchester United parted ways with David de Gea in the summer transfer window of 2023. The Spanish goalkeeper left on a free transfer after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract at Old Trafford.

De Gea ended his 12-year tenure at United. Man United confirmed De Gea's departure on Saturday (July 8, 2023) evening WIB.

"David de Gea has announced his departure from Manchester United, ending his 12-year tenure," stated Man United's official announcement. "He has achieved various trophies and personal accolades, solidifying his position as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the club's history," the club's statement continued.

De Gea's departure did not cause panic at Man United in this transfer window. The Glazer family-owned club had already prepared a replacement for the goalkeeper. That replacement is Andre Onana.

Alongside De Gea's departure, Man United is also close to finalizing the transfer of Onana from Inter Milan. Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that The Red Devils have reached a personal agreement with the Cameroonian goalkeeper.

With that, Man United only needs to negotiate with Inter Milan regarding the transfer fee for Onana. Man United and Inter Milan are reported to have agreed on a fee of £45 million (approximately Rp875 billion) for Onana. According to the same report, Man United will complete the transfer this week.

The English media outlet The Sun revealed the salary that Onana will receive at Man United. The 27-year-old goalkeeper will earn £100,000 (approximately Rp1.9 billion) per week.

This amount is significantly smaller than De Gea's last wage at Man United, which amounted to £375,000 (approximately Rp7.3 billion) per week. Throughout the 2022-2023 season, Onana started to replace Samir Handanovic as Inter Milan's first-choice goalkeeper.

He made 41 appearances for Inter Milan in various competitions. Out of those 41 matches, Onana only conceded 36 goals and kept 19 clean sheets.

Furthermore, Onana became a solid defensive wall for I Nerazzurri in the Champions League, keeping 8 clean sheets out of 13 matches. The impressive performances of the Cameroon-born goalkeeper led Inter Milan to reach the final of the prestigious European club competition.
