In a surprising turn of
events, Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr faced a crushing 5-0 defeat in their first
pre-season friendly this summer against Celta Vigo on Monday night. Ronaldo
played 45 minutes of the match, while Marcelo Brozovic made his debut for the
Saudi Pro League side. The first half ended in a goalless draw, but Celta Vigo
dominated the game after the break in Faro.
Gael Alonso opened the scoring
just before the hour mark, followed by braces from Miguel Rodriguez and Jorgen
Strand Larsen, sealing a resounding victory for Celta Vigo. Brozovic, who
recently made the move from Inter Milan, played for 54 minutes before being
substituted off the field, just before Celta Vigo's onslaught.
During the first half, Ronaldo
missed a golden opportunity to give Al-Nassr the lead, and it proved to be a
costly miss for his team. Al-Nassr coach Luis Castro now faces the challenge of
preparing his team for upcoming friendlies against Benfica, PSG, and Inter
Milan, all formidable opponents with significant Champions League pedigree.
While Celta Vigo, who finished
13th in LaLiga last season, may have been considered a relatively easier
opponent, they ultimately humiliated Al-Nassr. Pre-season friendlies provide
teams with an opportunity to assess their strengths and weaknesses before the
competitive matches begin. It is also a chance to evaluate new players and
their potential impact on the team's performance and results.
However, Al-Nassr will have to
work with their existing squad for the upcoming Saudi Pro League season. FIFA
has imposed a ban on the club from registering new players due to an ongoing
dispute with Leicester City. Despite this setback, Al-Nassr will need to
regroup and focus on maximizing their current resources to achieve success in
the upcoming season.
