Indonesian President Joko Widodo, widely known as Jokowi, is brimming with optimism as Ewer Airport in Asmat District, South Papua Province, prepares to open its gates, ushering in a new era of connectivity and accelerated mobility for individuals and goods in the region.

"Connectivity between regions, whether it's districts, provinces, or islands, is of utmost importance. Strong connectivity can enhance the speed of people and goods in motion. It can also break down barriers of isolation," Jokowi declared during the inauguration of the Ewer Airport Terminal, a momentous event broadcasted live on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.

Jokowi highlighted that Ewer Airport has already been facilitating flights from Timika twice a week, flights from Kamur four times a week, and flights from Merauke four times a week.

The president's optimism extends to the belief that Ewer Airport will also unlock the potential for tourism in Asmat while generating a positive economic impact for South Papua.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, also present at the event, emphasized that the construction and development of transportation infrastructure in Asmat District reflect the government's commitment to fostering equitable development across Indonesia, particularly in South Papua.

Sumadi shared that the government had built a passenger terminal at Ewer Airport with a touch of minimalist architecture, incorporating ornaments and interiors inspired by Asmat culture.

"For instance, the installation of a miniature Asmat boat symbolizes not only a means of transportation but also a profound philosophy of life and death for the Asmat tribe," Sumadi explained.

He further revealed that the development of Ewer Airport took place from 2018 to 2022, with a total budget of Rp287 billion sourced from the state budget.

Ewer Airport boasts a runway measuring 1,650 meters by 30 meters, capable of accommodating ATR72-600 type aircraft. The passenger terminal covers an area of 488 square meters and can cater to a staggering 14,000 passengers annually, Sumadi added, showcasing the enhanced capacity of the airport.

With the opening of Ewer Airport, a new chapter unfolds for Asmat and Papua, bringing the promise of improved connectivity, economic growth, and enriched cultural experiences.
