OTTAWA - In a surprising
announcement on Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife
Sophie revealed that they were separating, marking the end of their
high-profile 18-year marriage. Over the years, the couple had been open about
the challenges in their relationship, and in recent times, they were seen less
frequently together in public.
Trudeau, aged 51, and Sophie
Gregoire Trudeau, aged 48, tied the knot in May 2005 and have three children,
aged 15, 14, and nine. On their anniversary in 2020, Trudeau described Sophie
as "my rock, my partner, and my best friend." The separation holds
poignant historical significance for Trudeau, as his father, former Prime
Minister Pierre Trudeau, also separated from his wife, Margaret, in 1977, while
he was in office.
The announcement comes as one
of the biggest personal crises for Trudeau since he assumed office in 2015,
given his emphasis on the importance of family life. Notably, the announcement
follows a major cabinet shuffle by Trudeau, aimed at boosting the fortunes of
his Liberal Party, which is currently trailing in the polls. Despite this
development, aides maintain that Trudeau is determined to lead the Liberals
into the next election, scheduled to be held by October 2025.
Taking to Instagram, Trudeau
shared, "Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many
meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to
separate." Sophie Gregoire Trudeau posted a nearly identical message on
her own Instagram account.
Public Safety Minister Dominic
LeBlanc, one of Trudeau's closest allies, is expected to brief members of the
cabinet on the matter later on Wednesday. Trudeau himself is also likely to
speak publicly about the separation later this week.
Trudeau's office has clarified
that the couple has signed a legal agreement and will focus on raising their
children. In the coming week, the family plans to go on vacation together.
While Gregoire Trudeau will move into separate accommodation in Ottawa, she
intends to spend ample time with the children at Rideau Cottage, the prime
minister's official residence, to provide them with as normal an upbringing as
possible. The couple is said to have joint custody of their children.
Gregoire Trudeau, an advocate
for gender equality who studied commerce at university, was working as a
reporter when she met Trudeau in 2003. They tied the knot two years later.
Trudeau, who was only 43 when
he became prime minister in late 2015, and the stylish couple quickly captured
the attention of the world media. Sophie was even dubbed "the hottest
first lady in the world" by the New York Post in October 2015. Vogue
magazine also featured the couple in its January 2016 issue, praising their
affectionate bond with embracing photos.
While in office, Trudeau and
Sophie were frequently seen together at social functions and during foreign
trips. However, in recent years, their joint appearances diminished, and signs
of strain were evident. Trudeau had already acknowledged the challenges in
their marriage even before becoming prime minister, stating in his
autobiography Common Ground in 2014, "our marriage isn't perfect, and we
have had difficult ups and downs."
Last year, on their wedding
anniversary, Sophie shared on social media, "we have navigated through
sunny days, heavy storms, and everything in between, and it ain't over."
She added that long-term relationships are inherently challenging.
Despite the separation, the
couple did attend significant events together, such as the coronation of King
Charles in London in May and the visit of U.S. President Joe Biden in late
March. As recently as Monday, Trudeau was still wearing his wedding ring.
