Real Madrid's preseason tour in the United States has been less than ideal, with consecutive losses denting fans' excitement for the upcoming 2023/24 season. In their latest encounter, the Spanish giants faced Italian side Juventus in a friendly match in Orlando, resulting in a 3-1 defeat for Real Madrid.
Juventus wasted no time
asserting their dominance, scoring within the opening minute. Moise Keane
capitalized on a rebound inside the six-yard box after a Weston McKennie shot
struck the post. The Italian team continued their relentless attack, with Tim
Weah finding the net and Dusan Vlahovic securing a tap-in goal in stoppage
time, leaving Real Madrid's defense exposed.
Carlo Ancelotti's side
struggled to cope without the presence of Aurelien Tchouameni in midfield and
the aggressive forward movement of their fullbacks throughout the match. While
Vinicius Jr. managed to pull one back for Real Madrid before halftime with an
impressive solo effort, goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny's stellar performance and
missed chances by Joselu hindered their goal-scoring opportunities.
To make matters worse, a
controversial decision from the officials added to Real Madrid's frustration. A
foul called on a Juventus player in the left corner of the box should have
resulted in a penalty kick for Real Madrid. However, due to the lack of VAR
technology at Camping World Stadium, the call couldn't be overturned, leaving
the Madridistas feeling shortchanged.
The disappointing performance
against Juventus followed a 3-0 loss to their arch-rivals Barcelona a few days
prior. While the preseason started on a positive note with victories against AC
Milan (3-2) and Manchester United (2-0), the recent setbacks have raised
concerns among supporters.
On the other hand, Juventus,
despite facing a season without European competition, concluded their friendly
matches on a high note. After drawing 2-2 against AC Milan, they clinched a
prestigious win over a Real Madrid side expected to contend for the La Liga
title in Spain.
Both clubs have completed
their scheduled friendlies, and Real Madrid will kick off their La Liga season
against Athletic Club on August 12. Meanwhile, Juventus will begin their Serie
A campaign against Udinese on August 20.
As the season approaches, Real
Madrid will need to regroup and address their defensive vulnerabilities and
finishing to meet the high expectations of their supporters and make a strong
title challenge in La Liga.
